Sabah Bah – Accommodation and Food in Kota Kinabalu

Where did we stayed and ate while we were in Kota Kinabalu weekend getaway?

Accommodation
Dreamtel Kota Kinabalu
Just to be frank, it was not easy for us to choose on the accommodation while we were in Kota Kinabalu town recently. As we were on a very tight budget as well as limited time, we finally ended up with Dreamtel Kota Kinabalu. We will be only in KK town just for a night where we will then headed to Kundasang.  Dreamtel is conveniently located within the city centre and very close to some tourist attractions (within walking distance) such as the Atkinson Clock Tower, the famous sunday market at Gaya Street that you wouldn’t want to miss, handicraft market and shopping malls like Wisma Merdeka, Suria Mall and many others.

Another plus point is that, this hotel is one of the 2015 Award Winner for the Travellers Choice and received certificate of excellence by the trusted TripAdvisor. Great! However, we did observed some setbacks such as the varieties offered for the breakfast buffet line. It’s very basic but we don’t mind that much as we had enough just to keep away our stomach growling and rumbling that morning. On the other part, the walls are thin, and this is worth having in mind when considering this hotel. We eventually could hear the neighbours talking, the ambient music played in the corridors and even the bell from the lift which could be louder than normal even at night-time.

But in overall, it’s really a pleasant stay considering the price of the room and attentive hotel staff.

J Residence, Kinabalu National Park, Kundasang
We ended up with this place while browsing through the selection of lodge and chalet around Kundasang town. It’s very near to Kota Kinabalu National Park, just a stone’s throw away from the entrance of the park headquarters and near to Kundasang town too. As there are 4 of us, we finally choose the second house (2 rooms) that could accommodate us with just RM88 per night / room. How cheap is that?

What attracted us was the big outdoor balcony which is also suitable to chill out and relax. You can actually laze around peacefully without any disturbances. And we really underestimate the cold weather that we experience during night-time and early of the morning. We were shivering and rolled ourselves in the blanket all the time. But, the only setback is the steep and narrow entrance which will bring you towards the parking area. One should have a good driving skills to overcome and encounter this. I rest my case to FF. In overall, good value for money considering what’s offer and perhaps a little gem for us too.

Halal Food
Santola Coffee, Warisan Square

We came across this hipster cafe by coincidence. Mum’s wanted to fix her daily coffee intake, so we google and this appeared top of the search list. It’s located in the 1st Floor of Warisan Square (by Centre Point and Sinsuran Junction). We were made to understand that they even have a few outlet around town such as the Santola Bar Cafe, secretly hiding within an industrial area in Kolombong which only serves local coffee, Cap Kuda Coffee Company. Mum’s ordered her all time favourite which is Latte meanwhile I ordered their signature drink, Chocolate Tea. Refreshing!

Gerai Glam’s Station 3
This is by far one of the best seafood stall we’ve ever had besides the one back home. And reasonable too! Fully recommended by our dear friend, BibieKarim. It’s best to get there as early as you can for dinner where the stall can be literally packed by 8.00pm. Oh ya, this stall is located near to the Kota Kinabalu Night Market or Dataran Todak. Easily spot as it’s the first shop from the ‘Todak’ statue.

Mango Garden Restaurant @ Rumah Terbalik
We tried this restaurant just by coincidence. We were visiting the upside down house of Borneo which nearly to lunch hour and this restaurant is located just next to it. We decided to jump into the restaurant after some considerations where it offers a special discount price to those who visited the house and another plus point it’s JAKIM Halal Certified! How cool is that? Besides, you can find Sabahan’s traditional food under one roof here in KK.

Mee Sup Ikan. This is super delicious! For real!

Nabalu Cafe Kundasang
Next in the list are this cafe located right at Nabalu Lodge Kundasang. We read some good reviews such as they have varieties of cheese cake which taste even better compared to Secret Recipe. Wow! So how’s the verdict? The cheese cake are ok to us which is less sweet. The portion and texture are good. We even tried other menu on the list such as Nabalu Club Sandwich. Simple but delicious! But we just have to put aside the comment for other menu such as the rice set and noodles. Nothing to wow about. You might one to skip that during your order.

Oh ya, before we forget, one of the best things that we had here are the ‘Roti Krim’ or bread with cream. The bread is so soft and the cream. Arrgggggggghh! To die for!

  1. J residence tu nampak selesa, mungkin saya boleh consider next time pegi sana. Murah is plus point!

Last time kat KK I stayed kat Kinabalu Mountain Lodge. Tak ingat berapa rate tapi murah! And pernah juga tidur kat Mountain Resthouse and Hallelujah Retreat Center. Semua pesen bajet-bajet punya. Kalau nak tengok Mount KK kene drive sikit atau jalan sikit. Tapi takpe, tetap best kan?
